The National Organization for Women (NOW) Club is celebrating Love Your Body Month this week with several events to promote self-love and a greater appreciation for natural beauty among the MHS community.
They are kicking off the week with “No Makeup Monday”. NOW club is asking MHS girls to come to school tomorrow makeup-free, or for those who need encouragement, they will be handing out makeup wipes during the day. Member Tess Shatz says, “We’re not shaming those who wear makeup and we’re not saying that we don’t like makeup. We’re simply saying that if you choose to wear makeup because you like it and it makes you happy, then that’s great! It’s just as valid a choice as not wearing makeup at all, but you should never feel pressured to wear makeup or to cover up your natural beauty, because we are all beautiful exactly as we are.” If you choose to go make-up-free, the club asks you to take a selfie and post it on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook using the hashtag #mhsnomakeupmonday.
On Tuesday, the club will be handing out pageant-like sashes, crowning MHS students for their great personality traits, like “Mr. Good at Math” or “Ms. Really Great Friend”. NOW hopes that this day will show contrast to most beauty pageants centered around superficial ideas of beauty and physical attributes. There also may be a pageant-esque surprise planned for lunch periods on this day!
To close up Love Your Body Week, there will be a movie screening of “America the Beautiful” or “Miss Representation” in Room 305. Refreshments will be served and students who attend may receive extra credit. The club will also hold a bake sale. (Wednesday is Official Love Your Body Day).
