My first encounter with a French toast bagel must have been many years ago at a big state swim meet: big brown paper bags filled with bagels and rows of Gatorade and Powerbars to purchase at concession stands. I heard someone order a “French toast bagel” and I thought I was hallucinating. How could they make French toast-flavored bagels? Did they just batter a plain bagel and add cinnamon? I had to try it.
Since then I’ve been satisfying my need for French toast bagels at Montclair’s own Hot Bagels Abroad. Hot Bagels is conveniently located on Valley Road, so it’s a favorite lunch destination for MHS students. French toast bagels are pretty popular, and I’ve heard people order theirs plain or even with egg and cheese. MHS Junior Elie Tyler prefers hers toasted with butter, and I swear by toasted with cream cheese. However you decide to have your FT bagel, you’ll be more than satisfied.
