Tumblr is an up-and-coming blogging website that has recently been causing controversy around MHS. The website itself isn’t the problem, but rather a specific blog that centers around Montclair teens. montclairswag.tumblr.com is a blog that contains pictures taken off of Montclairans’ Facebook and Flickr pages without permission from the photographers or subjects. Most of the pictures are of Montclair High students and their friends at parties, hanging out around town, or even in school.
Since no one knows who this anonymous picture-creeping blogger is, it’s no wonder that people have been raising questions and concerns online. Visitors have called the blogger “weird and creepy” for posting the pictures, one sophomore boy pictured on the site confided that they “found it violating, taking other people’s private pictures and exposing them on the public internet in a way they probably don’t want.”
However, others have said that it is a form of art that celebrates Montclair culture and teen lifestyle. Some of the anonymous comments posted through the blog’s ask box say that it is a cool, modern portrayal of our lives and an indirect way of praising the photography scene of Montclair. One has even said that the unrevealed identity of the blogger is what makes it cool.
Becca, who is a Junior featured on the blog, has conflicting opinions on the site. She says, “To be honest I can’t really decide if it’s cool or creepy. I think it portrays our town really well and captures the essence of Montclair, from the music to all the pictures. But at the same time I find it creepy that no one knows who created the blog and it goes to show that once you put something on the internet it’s fair game for anyone to use.” Indeed, she brings up a good point: that this site proves that nothing is truly private or safe on the internet anymore.
So head over to montclairswag.tumblr.com and judge for yourself if it’s flattering art or stalkerish violation.
